Shamma:

Shamma, the eldest of the Sabir Sisters, is widely acknowledged as one of Canada’s best fiddlers. She was the first and youngest female nominee ever to be invited to the Canadian Grand Masters Championships and placed in Canada’s top eleven in Ottawa. She is a songwriter and composer with writing credits on the albums of many prestigious Canadian fiddlers including Calvin Vollrath and Gordon Stobbe. Shamma’s heartfelt bluesy vocals, combined with her fiddle, mandolin and cello offerings give the group a folk/roots flavor that places them in a musical sphere of their own.

Sarah:

Sarah has studied violin through the Royal Conservatory and Suzuki methods. Her experience with the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra has provided her with the ability to play many diverse styles. Her respect and love for the Canadian Old Tyme tradition of fiddling is evident in the polish and quiet sophistication that she brings to her music. In addition to her fiddling, Sarah’s vocal harmonies float tantalizingly above the group’s melodies lending an ephemeral quality to the vocal sounds of the ensemble.

Roxanna:

Onstage, Roxanna’s personality is reflected through her melodious songs, which not only tell stories but engages the audience through the journey which is the show. Roxanna’s passion for songs with meaning and traditional influences (i.e., Celtic, Acadian, and Bluegrass) brings a flavor of relatability to the Sabir Sisters’ sound. Roxanna not only sings and performs background vocals but is renowned for her clean, precise and danceable fiddle style. The traditional Canadian piano accompaniment style is another of Roxanna’s passions, providing the group with mesmerizing rhythms and haunting melodies.

Laila:

From her soulful and expressive aires, to her own feisty compositions, Laila’s love of fiddle music is evident in her playing. In addition to her talent on fiddle, Laila is known for her rhythmic, tap-infused step-dance routines. She is the first fiddler in Western Canada to master the art of step-dancing and fiddling at the same time. When she’s not tearing up the dance floor or playing her fiddle, she can be heard on the djimbe as the group’s percussive heartbeat, and Laila’s haunting vocal harmonies are an integral part of the group’s sound.
