Your Hosts and Organizers:
Roxanna Sabir
Onstage, Roxanna’s personality is reflected through her melodious songs, which not only tell stories but engages the audience through the journey which is the show. Roxanna’s passion for songs with meaning and traditional influences (i.e., Celtic, Acadian, and Bluegrass) brings a flavor of relatability to the Sabir Sisters’ sound. Roxanna not only sings and performs background vocals but is renowned for her clean, precise and danceable fiddle style. The traditional Canadian piano accompaniment style is another of Roxanna’s passions, providing the group with mesmerizing rhythms and haunting melodies.
Sarah Sabir
Sarah has studied violin through the Royal Conservatory and Suzuki methods. Her experience with the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra has provided her with the ability to play many diverse styles. Her respect and love for the Canadian Old Tyme tradition of fiddling is evident in the polish and quiet sophistication that she brings to her music. In addition to her fiddling, Sarah’s vocal harmonies float tantalizingly above the group’s melodies lending an ephemeral quality to the vocal sounds of the ensemble.
Instructors Biographies:
Shamma Sabir: B.C. - Fiddle/Rock Band
Shamma, the eldest of the Sabir Sisters, is widely acknowledged as one of Canada’s best fiddlers. She was the first and youngest female nominee ever to be invited to the Canadian Grand Masters Championships and placed in Canada’s top eleven in Ottawa. She is a songwriter and composer with writing credits on the albums of many prestigious Canadian fiddlers including Calvin Vollrath and Gordon Stobbe. Shamma’s heartfelt bluesy vocals, combined with her fiddle, mandolin and cello offerings give the group a folk/roots flavor that places them in a musical sphere of their own.
Liz Carroll
The 21st Century has become the most prolific recording century of Liz Carroll's career. That little joke helps to celebrate the 2002 release of Liz's latest, "Lake Effect." After the success of 2000's "lost in the loop," which came 12 years after her first solo album, getting another recording from Liz is, in fact, a cause for celebration.
Since she was 18, when she astounded the Celtic music world by winning the Senior All-Ireland Championship, Liz and her fiddle have been amazing audiences around the globe. Her recordings and appearances on concert stages, television and radio, have established Liz as one of traditional music's most sought after performers. "lost in the loop," released in 2000, won Liz new fans around the world, as it garnered an Indie Award and Liz being named Traditional Performer of the Year for 2000.
Mark Sullivan
Mark Sullivan is a 6-time Canadian Fiddle Champion. He has been awarded the title of Canadian Grand Master on three occasions and is viewed by many as an Ambassador of Canadian Fiddling. Mark has toured extensively throughout the world and has performed alongside some of the finest names in his field, including The Chieftains, a PBS-TV feature with John McDermott, and Leahy. A leader in Canadian fiddling, Mark is in demand as a spirited performer, sideman, recording artist, guitarist, and teacher. He is a regular instructor at prominent Music Camps in Canada and the United States. Mark holds his Masters in Education and is currently living in Vancouver, Canada working as a teacher and active as a musician. Mark has 6 recordings to his credit. Alex Lamoureux
Alex Lamoureux is currently 16 years old. He is in Grade 10 at Highland Secondary School in Comox, BC.
Born and raised in Manitoba, Alex (who is Metis) followed his mom around to old time dances, fiddle camps, and performances.
He first picked up the fiddle at the age of 5, after having been exposed to the fiddling of his mom, Patti Kusturok. While Alex did not immediately take to this instrument, the love of the music was instilled at a very young age.
At age 7, the passion for the music became apparent and Alex started getting "serious" about playing the fiddle. His mom started him off, but it wasn't until attending the Emma Lake fiddle camp that it really "took". He learned his first 3 real fiddle tunes from the late Sandy Cameron, who was a huge inspiration to Alex.
Now at age 16, Alex is active in the competition circuits in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and BC. He placed first for 3 consecutive years in his age category at the John Arcand Fiddle Fest in Saskatoon. He also placed first in Govan Saskatchewan, and has several top 3 placings throughout Manitoba. In 2003, Alex took the title of International Junior Champion at the International Peace Gardens. In 2006 he placed in the top 5 in the 18 & Under category at the Canadian Championships in Shelburne, ON, and in 2007 he was in the top 3 in the 18 & Under at the prestigious Pembroke Fiddle Contest.
2007 has been a banner year for Alex. He is the current BC Open Fiddle Champ and placed first in the Championship class at contests in Vernon, Duncan, Abbotsford, and Prince George. He also earned the title of 2007 Grand North American Open Champion.
